Matching Techniques and the 27 Moon Signs
Marriage matching astrologers will use between 8 and 12 of these Kuta techniques. The basis of Kuta agreements is the very specific relationships of positions of the Moon in each of the couple's birth charts. Vedic astrology is very rich in the quantity and quality of techniques its uses. I have listed the 27 nakshatras in the following table, showing where they fit by degree within the signs of the zodiac. I have also listed the specific star that is held to mark the approximate starting position of each nakshatra group. You will also see a "wheel" of the sky below that gives you an idea how the 27 nakshatras divide the sky.

Scoring The Eight Kutas: Getting a Mate that Counts
Most of the calculations for matching starts from the Moon nakshatra in the female's chart counting out to the position of the Moon nakshatra in the male's chart. Some hold that the Moon is used since it provides more than twice as many data points as the Sun, and the Moon astrologically represents one's emotions--no doubt a significant factor in determining compatibility amongst prospective partners.
One of the most commonly used Kuta agreement system is comprised of eight components. These eight agreements are listed in look-up tables in many of the panchangas or planetary almanacs produced today in India. The eight-part system is explained in detail in books such as the "Muhurtha Chintamani", mentioned previously. The eight are each given points starting at 8 and descending down to the last Kuta agreement which is given one. The total is 36 points. The astrologer tallies the points derived from each Kuta match and makes a balanced judgement. These points are also called "gunas", which some translate as "quality".
